In November 2012, I decided to follow my teenage dreams and start figure skating at 24 years old.
Growing up, I always wanted to figure skate, but the nearest ice rink was four hours away, so I made due with what I had - inline hockey skates. I taught myself to cross-over, and move fluidly; would watch Trượt băng on TV and try to figure out how to do moves on inlines (like Spread Eagles.)
I wanted to start Trượt băng in college, but once again, there was no rink.
On the first day of moving to Los Angeles, I drove past Culver City Ice Arena, and thought to myself "there's my dream, waiting to happen." And I did nothing about it for a year and a half.
In November, all of that changed. I changed. I bought my first pair of Trượt băngs and immediately got recruited for pairs by a talented figure skater and we started working with Coach Gary Kemp. However, because I was just họcing to skate, I found it difficult to work with a partner, so in January I started training solo with Gary.
The recital was my first goal in the world of figure skating. While I didn't nail every trick, it was a great experience and now I have a solid base from which to move forward. I plan on doing my first showcase competition in June.
Let's see where this goes!
And remember kids: It's never too late to follow your dreams!
Thanks to my awesome roommate Harry Tiffany V for recording the video!
